Progressive Sudoku Hints: A Better Way to Get Unstuck

Good help should reveal the next question before it reveals the answer.

The most useful hint is often one step less specific than the answer you were about to request. It points your attention towards a unit or relationship and leaves the deduction to you.

A progressive ladder keeps assistance proportional to the obstacle.

Level one: point to a region

Ask for a row, column or box that deserves attention. Re-scan it by missing digits and identify any single or locked candidate yourself.

Level two: name a technique

If the region is still quiet, ask whether the next step uses a pair, locked candidate or another pattern. Knowing the category narrows your search without choosing the digit for you.

Level three: show the candidates

Reveal the cells or candidates involved, then reconstruct the elimination. This is particularly useful when a pattern is new and your notes are otherwise accurate.

Level four: reveal the placement

Use a direct cell-and-number hint only after the earlier levels fail. Treat the placement as an exercise: prove it from the current grid before continuing.

Stop between levels

Take one complete scan after each hint. The purpose is to restore your own solving loop, not to consume the ladder as quickly as possible.

A small checklist

  • Ask for a region first
  • Request a technique before a number
  • Reconstruct candidate eliminations
  • Use a placement hint last
  • Scan independently between hints

Put it into practice
