Solver discussions often use compact vocabulary because experienced players need to describe a pattern quickly. The words are labels, not extra rules.

Translate each label into a question about cells, digits and units.

Peers and houses

Peers are cells that share a row, column or box. A house is one of those units. “This candidate sees that one” means the two cells share a house and cannot both contain the same digit.

Strong and weak links

A weak link means two candidates cannot both be true. A strong link means at least one of two candidates must be true. These are the building blocks of chains.

Wings

A wing is a small branching pattern built from two-candidate cells. Translate the name into the exact candidates and visibility relationships before drawing the shape.

Fish

An X-Wing or Swordfish tracks one digit across rows and columns. Ask where that digit can go in a few base lines and which cover lines receive the restriction.

Write your own translation

After reading a solver explanation, rewrite it in one sentence without the name. If you can state the units, candidates and elimination, the notation has done its job.
